A solar warranty can look reassuring on a sales proposal: 25 years of panel coverage, 10 years for an inverter, and a workmanship promise from the installer. But those numbers do not all protect the same thing, and they do not always come from the same company. A residential solar system usually comes with several separate warranties. Read each one before signing, rather than relying on a single warranty term stated in a proposal. Solar panel product warranty

The product warranty covers defects in the physical solar panel. If a panel has a manufacturing defect, such as failed internal components, damaged junction boxes, or abnormal material deterioration, the manufacturer may repair, replace, or credit the affected panel.

Product warranties commonly run 12 to 25 years. Longer is generally better, but the manufacturer’s claim process matters too. For example, a battery may be covered for 10 years or a stated number of megawatt-hours, whichever comes first. A household that cycles a battery heavily for time-of-use savings may reach a throughput limit sooner than a household using it mainly for backup power. Workmanship and roof penetration warranty

The installer’s workmanship warranty covers errors in installation, such as improperly secured mounting hardware, poor wiring practices, or water intrusion caused by solar roof penetrations. This is often the warranty homeowners need most urgently in the first several years.

Terms vary widely. Some installers offer one to five years, while others offer 10 years or longer. Coverage should clearly state whether it includes roof leaks attributable to the installation, repair labor, and restoration of affected roofing materials. Do not assume a panel manufacturer will handle an installation error. Manufacturers and installers typically have separate responsibilities.

What solar warranties usually do not cover

Warranty documents contain exclusions for a reason. Some are reasonable, while others can create unexpected gaps. Damage from hurricanes, hail, wildfire, lightning, falling trees, vandalism, or other external events is usually an insurance matter rather than a warranty claim.

Avoid aggressive panel cleaning, pressure washing, and unapproved chemicals. In many parts of the country, normal rain is sufficient for routine cleaning. If your panels need attention because of pollen, dust, or bird droppings, follow the manufacturer’s instructions or hire a qualified provider.
