Owning a system through cash or a loan usually offers the strongest long-term financial potential. You control the equipment, receive the available tax benefits if eligible, and keep the value of the energy production after the system is paid off. The trade-off is a larger upfront cost or a monthly loan payment.
Leases and power purchase agreements, commonly called PPAs, can lower the barrier to entry. In these arrangements, a solar company or financing provider owns the equipment. You make a monthly lease payment or pay for the electricity the panels generate. That can work for homeowners who prioritize predictable energy costs and do not want to make a large investment upfront, but the long-term economics are often less favorable than ownership.
The right answer depends on your cash position, tax situation, expected time in the home, roof condition, and local utility rules.
Paying Cash for Solar

A lease can make sense when a homeowner cannot use tax credits, does not want to take on system ownership, or places a high value on a predictable payment.
